Shoplifting suspect led MS Coast police on chase that ended in collision, authorities say
A suspect who fled police through the Mississippi Coast Thursday afternoon will face several charges after a chase ended with a collision in Ocean Springs, authorities said.
The chase began after a suspect, who police have not identified, allegedly shoplifted from the Lowe’s in D’Iberville, Deputy Chief Marty Griffin said.
D’Iberville police chased the driver from the Lowe’s parking lot until he reached Biloxi, Griffin said. Biloxi officers pursued the suspect from Interstate 110 to Beach Boulevard.
The suspect then fled into Ocean Springs. He turned off Highway 90 through the Big Lots parking lot and onto Hanley Road, Ocean Springs Deputy Chief Steven Dye said.
He drove south through the neighborhood, then turned north again and drove east on Government Street, according to Dye.
The suspect collided with a truck towing a trailer near Perryman Road, Dye said.
The suspect ran from officers after the collision but was taken into custody near Ridgeview Drive. Authorities took the suspect to a hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, Dye said.
Police closed Government Street from Perryman Road and Beachview Drive to clear the trailer.
The suspect was driving a dark gray Ford Fusion, Dye said. No other injuries were reported.
The suspect will face a shoplifting charge from D’Iberville and a felony eluding charge from Biloxi, police said. Dye said the suspect would probably also face charges in Ocean Springs.
It was not immediately clear what merchandise the suspect allegedly shoplifted.
