Hattiesburg police arrested a fourth suspect on Wednesday in connection to the attempted carjacking and killing of Southern Miss football player Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr.

Nytavion Shaw, 16, of Laurel is charged with one count of capital murder and one count of attempted armed carjacking in the case that left the Lucedale native dead in his car this month outside the Ivy Row apartments in the 200 block of Ivy Row Circle in Hattiesburg.

Shaw is the fourth suspect charged in the killing. Police arrested Orlando May, 18, of Hattiesburg, on one count of capital murder, attempted carjacking, felony eluding and two counts of grand larceny auto. Allen Marcus Gardner, 17, of Houston, faces one count of capital murder and one count of attempted carjacking. And Samir Green, 16, of Hattiesburg, was charged as an adult on one count of capital murder and one count of attempted carjacking.

Police said they arrested Shaw Wednesday morning and booked him into the Forrest County Jail.

The arrests came after police rushed to the apartment complex in response to a June 11 shooting and found Daniels dead in his car of a gunshot wound, Hattiesburg authorities said.

Daniels, a star cornerback at Southern Miss, graduated in 2021 from George County High School, then played at Ole Miss as a defensive back. He transferred to Southern Miss for the 2023 season and appeared in all 12 games.
