Gulfport woman killed in bed by stray bullet from outside apartment, police say
A woman died in her bed Sunday after someone fired into an apartment during a shootout in Gulfport and police are looking for multiple suspects.
The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at an apartment building at 3318 39th Avenue., which is west of U.S. 49.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer identified the victim as Donna Perkins, 24, of Gulfport.
She was transferred to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport and was pronounced dead at 8:15 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Gulfport Police PIO Jason DuCré said a suspect fired into a group of people near the apartments where Perkins lived.
The group of people fired back and a bullet went into the apartment and hit the victim, he said.
“She was struck by a bullet while she was in bed,” he said.
Police said a suspect or suspects, one of which was originally reported as being in custody but was not, shot a rifle “indiscriminately” into the apartment.
A second victim later arrived at a local area hospital and police said he remains in critical condition.
“We’re hopeful there will be several arrests in this,” DuCré said.
