According to the school district, the officer searched the student after a tip from another student. The gun was found in the student’s backpack. It was not loaded and in such “poor shape” that school resource officers said they had a hard time trying to get the gun “to properly engage.”

The student who was arrested had not made any threats to harm anyone.

The release said the student who was taken into custody would face discipline in accordance with school board policies.

“We want to thank the student that made the report and continue to encourage all students to report any unsafe situation to a trusted adult,” Boudreaux said in the release.
