Mississippi boy, 12, dies after Jeep hits him in Coast city, police say

A 12-year-old died Sunday of injuries sustained when a Jeep struck him as he attempted to cross Lamey Bridge Road, D’Iberville Police Chief Shannon Nobles said.

The boy was trying to cross the street, just north of Sangani Boulevard, in front of the convenience store known as the C-Store, Nobles said, when the incident occurred.

Authorities responded after receiving a call about the incident at 2:22 p.m. Sunday.

At the scene, police attempted life-saving measures on the boy with the aid of an off-duty nurse who stopped to help. He was taken from there to Merit Health in Biloxi for treatment.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer identified the deceased as Tristan Smith, of Biloxi. Smith, a seventh grader at Biloxi Junior High School, died at Merit Health at 2:54 p.m. Sunday, Switzer said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, though Nobles said no foul play is suspected.

“It’s just terrible,” Nobles said.

Biloxi police are assisting in the investigation.

A gofundme account has been set up to help Smith’s family pay for funeral services.
