Shots were fired during a police pursuit Wednesday after a carjacking suspect held up a man and his wife in Jackson County.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell, a suspect held up the elderly couple around 3:15 p.m. at a church in St. Martin.

Following the robbery, the suspect fled in the victims’ car, which deputies found a short time later.

When the suspect did not stop, a pursuit started, ending with the suspect pulling into the front yard of a residence on Ole Biloxi Road in Latimer. That’s when shots were fired, the sheriff said in a press release.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will determine who fired the shots, Ezell said.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody without incident.

Ezell says charges are pending against the suspect.

Late Wednesday afternoon, crime scene tape blocked off the residence. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and MBI were on the scene examining a blue SUV that had apparently come to a stop in the front yard of the house.

The driver’s side door of the SUV was open.

The SUV, a GMC Envoy, was stopped about 50 feet from the front door.

MBI will lead the investigation since officers were involved.

“MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing their investigation, agents will share their findings with the local District Attorney’s Office,” the office of DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell said in a press release.
