Coast man arrested in neighbor’s killing said rifle ‘unexpectedly discharged,’ police say

A D’Iberville man accused of causing the shooting death of a neighbor at their apartment complex has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter, D’Iberville Police Chief Shannon Nobles said.

Eric Joseph Adams, 35, told police he was putting away a rifle in his third-floor apartment when it “unexpectedly discharged” around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nobles said.

The bullet tore through the door of an adjacent third-floor apartment and struck and killed 23-year-old Stayvia Leone Hood, Nobels confirmed.

Hood lived in the third-floor apartment across from Adams’ apartment at Landmark of D’Iberville on Lamey Bridge Road.

Adams dialed 911 after his gun was discharged.

When D’Iberville police got to the scene, Nobles said, they forced their way into Hood’s apartment and found her suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but authorities pronounced Hood dead at the scene.

“It’s just horrible, just horrible,” Nobles said.

After his arrest, Adams was taken to the Harrison County jail. Justice Court Judge Albert Fountain set his bond at $500,000.

The investigation is ongoing, Nobles said.
