Gulfport police are investigating a hit and run death after a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. 49 early Monday morning.

Police responded to the intersection near Highway 49 and 29th Street at 3:11 a.m. after receiving a report of a hit and run involving a pedestrian, according to a press release.

A woman was found in the middle of the southbound lane of the highway, police said. The area is near a Circle K gas station.

Police said the woman was taken to a local hospital where she died from injuries sustained in the hit and run. Her identity is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
