Update: Two dead in Gulfport shooting and 2 men shot in Gautier
Two people died in shootings in Gulfport Monday and two men were shot in Gautier.
Gulfport police were called at 1:30 p.m. to report a shooting near Rippy Road and Jeff Road, which is east of U.S. 49 and north of the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
They found one man dead from gunshot wounds.
Police say they gained information at the scene, and located the suspect nearby.
Officers directed the suspect to disarm and surrender. Instead the suspect fired one shot, and according to the police report, the officers returned fire.
The suspect, who was not identified, was found in a wooded area and police said appeared to have suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation is ongoing and because Gulfport police exchanged gunfire with the suspect before he was found dead a short time later. The investigation is being conducted by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, the Harrison County District Attorney’s Office and Biloxi Police.
Gulfport Police Chief Chris Ryle said they have to wait on the autopsy and forensic exam to confirm the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Gautier Police posted on Facebook Monday morning that they were alerted by an unknown 911 call about a shooting. Police were dispatched at 8:30 a.m. to Rue de Courmont street, which is south of Martin Bluff Road.
Officers found two men with gunshot wounds, according to police.
They are at USA Medical Center in Mobile in critical condition. Their identity is being withheld during the active investigation.
