Police charge suspect with murder in weekend stabbing of Gulfport man

Police on Tuesday identified a 59-year-old Gulfport man as the victim of an apparent homicide over the weekend and arrested a suspect.

James Higgins Jr. of Gulfport was identified as the victim, according to a press release from the Gulfport Police Department.

Phillip Latrell Collins, 50, is now at the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility and charged with one count of first-degree murder. Police did not release where the suspect is from.

An investigation into the apparent homicide began Sunday after Gulfport police responded to a welfare check and found the victim stabbed multiple times, according to the release.

The investigation revealed that Higgins and Collins had gotten into a verbal argument which escalated into a physical confrontation. Collins stabbed Higgins multiple times and fled the scene, police said.

The police ask anyone with information in the case to call the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
