Law enforcement officer involved in shooting that killed 1 at Biloxi courthouse, official says
A law enforcement officer was involved in the shooting of a person at the Harrison County courthouse in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Friday, the state Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell has confirmed to the Sun Herald.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said one person is dead, and an officer was wheeled away on a stretcher.
Sheriff Troy Peterson told the Sun Herald the injured officer is a Harrison County deputy who was taken to Merit Health hospital but is expected to be fine.
A body could be seen covered under a blanket on the west side of the courthouse.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officers were on the scene. MBI investigates all shootings involving law enforcement officers.
Crime scene tape surrounded the courthouse Friday. The city of Biloxi sent an alert out at 4:01 p.m. local time that the Lameuse Street was closed at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and that residents should avoid the area.
Harrison County public information officer Jeff Clark said the courthouse near City Hall is on lockdown until further notice.
