Alleged Crips gang member from New York City arrested in Bay St. Louis
An alleged member of a New York City chapter of the Crips street gang was arrested at an apartment in Bay St. Louis, authorities confirmed Thursday.
The FBI and Bay St. Louis police arrested Kaiam Donovan, 37, in the 10 block of Bay Park Way on Wednesday, Bay St. Louis Police Chief Gay Ponthieux said in a news release.
Donovan was wanted on a warrant as a fugitive from justice.
Local, state and federal authorities in New York arrested Donovan and 35 others on drug-trafficking charges in 2008 for the alleged sale of cocaine, heroin and marijuana to undercover police officers. The sales took place at a public housing complex within 1,000 feet of three public schools.
According to the FBI and court records, a New York grand jury indicted Donovan on five counts of third-degree criminal sale of controlled substances and five counts of trafficking drugs near a school ground.
The FBI identified Donovan as one of alleged members of the Crips, a gang that originated in Los Angeles and spread to become what gang investigators have described as one of the most violent street gangs in the United States. The members are primarily Black and the gang’s colors are blue.
Despite Donovan’s alleged gang involvement, Ponthieux said authorities arrested him without incident.
After his arrest, Donovan was jailed in Harrison County pending his extradition back to New York.
