4-month old baby killed, mom airlifted in Jackson County car crash, sheriff says

A 4-month-old baby died in a single-car accident that also injured the child’s mother and her older brother, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said in a news release Tuesday.

The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. Monday on Davis Sawmill Road, about a half mile off Mississippi 613, the release said.

The driver, identified as Roketa Smith of George County, was airlifted from the scene to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile for treatment. Her 9-year-old son was also taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates the crash happened after Smith lost control of her car, went off the the road and hit a large pine tree.
