A United States Marshal’s Service Task Force Officer is recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered while serving an arrest warrant Tuesday morning outside a hotel in Gautier, according to a release from the FBI.

The Task Force was enforcing a warrant for kidnapping at an extended stay hotel when shots were fired.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said in a release that the officer, a Harrison County sheriff’s deputy, was shot in the neck and taken to Ocean Springs Hospital. He has treated for non-life threatening injuries and has been released.

Joseph Dale Sonnier, 31, of Hancock County was taken into custody on state kidnapping charges. Federal charges are pending, according to the FBI.

Sonnier was wanted in Hancock County for two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Sonnier is in FBI custody.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting and processing the scene. The FBI is investigating the assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
