Coast woman finds daughter trying to smother her infant baby, sheriff says

A Saucier woman was arrested on a felony child abuse charge for attempting to smother her 9-week-old infant, according to a news release from Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson.

Simona Rene Somers, 23, was arrested Saturday.

The arrest happened after Somers’ mother reported that she walked into her daughter’s bedroom and saw her covering the baby’s face with a thick blanket, the release said.

An AMR ambulance was called to the scene to check on the baby, but the child had not suffered any “obvious” injuries, the release said.

Harrison County authorities reported the alleged abuse to the state Department of Human Services. and the child was removed from the home.

Somers was taken to the Harrison County jail, where Justice Court Judge Albert Fountain set her bond at $50,000.
