Woman found dead at industrial site in Jackson County

Police are investigating the death of a Jackson County woman whose body was found Thursday at the former Mississippi Phosphates site in Pascagoula.

Jackson County Deputy Coroner Carole Anne Fagan identified her as Jennifer Leigh Fell Patrick, 36.

Fagan said officials aren’t yet releasing details of who found her body at around 5 a.m. Thursday, or if the death has been ruled suspicious.

Fagan did say the woman lived in Jackson County and had not been reported missing.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, she said.

Mississippi Phosphates was a major fertilizer producer on Mississippi 611, also known as Industrial Road, near the Chevron Refinery.

It opened in the 1950s, ceased operations in December 2014 and declared bankruptcy under Chapter 11 protection, leaving more than 7 million gallons of highly acidic, contaminated wastewater stored at the plant, according to a Sun Herald report.

The EPA took control of the two huge gypsum mounds along Industrial Road east of Pascagoula in 2017. It now is a Superfund federal cleanup site.
