A woman’s boyfriend is in custody after a 7-month-old baby from Ocean Springs died Wednesday.
Sheriff Mike Ezell said Michael Harris, 27, was arrested on a charge of capital murder after Tanner Cowart died at the USA Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama. Ezell said the baby was abused.
The infant was initially treated at Ocean Springs hospital on Friday and deputies were called to investigate suspected abuse, Ezell said.
He said Harris was at home with the baby in Gulf Park Estates that Friday while the mother took another child to school. Ezell said the mother told investigators that when she got back about 8:30 a.m. she found Tanner unresponsive and called 911.

Ezell said Harris was initially charged with felony child abuse but the charge was upgraded after Tanner died.
Harris is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center without bond. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday before Judge Sharon Sigalas at the Jackson County Youth Court.
