A 19-year-old man was arrested Saturday after allegedly forcing his way into a home where his ex-girlfriend was hanging out with her new boyfriend.

Hancock County Chief Investigator Glenn Grannan said Cardez Demonte Ellingson forced his way into the home on Standard Cemetery Road with a shotgun. Grannan said a struggle for the gun ensued when it went off, striking the refrigerator.

Grannan said Ellingson fled the scene and was arrested about an hour later. He was booked into the Hancock County jail at 3:14 p.m. Saturday on charges of burglary and aggravated assault.

“Fortunately, nobody was hurt — well, except for the refrigerator,” Grannan said.

Grannan said the investigation is ongoing.
