What prompted a Gautier man to fire on two motorists in Jackson County?

A Gautier resident shot at two different men in a case of road rage, resulting in one man’s death, police said.

Luis Joel Soto Jr., 27, fired shots at two men within 2 1/2 miles Thursday night, and one led to the death of a 61-year-old man, Police Capt. Doug Adams said.

Soto and the two victims were eastbound, Adams said.

Traffic from a shift change at Ingalls Shipyard was heavy about 11:07 p.m. Thursday when a caller told police someone was shooting at their vehicle on Jerry St. Pé Highway, Adams said. Jerry St. Pé is the access road to Ingalls.

While police were responding to that area, dispatchers received reports of shots fired in an eastbound lane of U.S. 90 at Victor Street.

A motorcyclist crashed his vehicle on Jerry St. Pé and police learned he had been shot multiple times, Adams said. Acadian Ambulance Service took him to Singing River Hospital, where he died about 11:57 p.m.

The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

It’s unclear if he works at Ingalls. Adams said neither he nor the other victim were on their way to work.

The shots fired at U.S. 90 did not hit the other man, Adams said.

Police closed the highway around Victor Street temporarily, diverting traffic around the crime scene.

Police arrested Soto on charges of murder and aggravated assault. He is held at the Jackson County Jail on a $1 million bond set by Pascagoula Municipal Judge Michael Fondren.

Adams declined to say why it’s a case of road rage, saying only “That’s a part of the investigation.”
