A woman died Tuesday after she was shot in the chest during a fight on a street corner, a Picayune police official confirmed.
Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Magri said officers were dispatched to the corner of Beech Street at Bender Street at 10:22 a.m. after a report of a shooting.
When they arrived, officers learned 19-year-old Sarai Bagley had been shot and was taken to Highland Community Hospital in a private vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Pearl River County Deputy Coroner Derek Turnage said.
The police investigation shows that Bagley, of Picayune, flagged down a black SUV at the street corner where the shooting occurred. Marlos Jones, 18, a passenger in the SUV, got out of the vehicle and got into an argument with Bagley in the street, Magri said. The driver, 24-year-old Kalista Turner, also got out of the vehicle.
When Turner and Jones got back into the SUV, Magri said, Bagley then went up to the passenger window and began hitting Jones.
Jones picked up a handgun and shot Bagley in the chest, Magri said, and then Turner drove them to the Picayune Police Department.
Turner allowed officers to search both vehicles, and the handgun used in the shooting was recovered, along with an AK-47 and an undisclosed amount of marijuana. Two shell casings were also recovered, Magri said.
Jones was arrested on a charge of second degree murder, and Turner was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. There was a passenger in the back seat of the SUV, Magri said, but that passenger was not arrested.
Turner and Jones live together in an apartment complex in the 100 block of S. Elmwood Street.
They are being held at the Picayune jail until their initial court appearances, Magri said.
