Man drives himself to jail after shooting his wife during an argument, police say

A man shot his wife during an argument outside of an Orange Grove medical clinic, and then he went to the Harrison County jail to turn himself in, Gulfport police say.

Police responded to the Memorial Physicians Clinic in the 12000 block of U.S. 49 about 3:50 p.m. in response to a shooting, said Sgt. Josh Bromen, and found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

Bromen said 47-year-old Jerome Verdell Jefferson, of Gulfport, is accused of shooting his wife while they were arguing outside of the office.

Gary Marchand, president at CEO of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, confirmed the victim is an employee of the hospital system.

After the shooting, Bromen said Jefferson drove to the jail to turn himself in.

The shooting occurred in the Acadian Plaza shopping center in Orange Grove. It’s just north of the Golden Corral restaurant.

The woman was taken by American Medical Response to an area hospital for treatment, Bromen said, and was later flown to a hospital in Mobile.

Bromen said the woman is in serious condition.

Jefferson was arrested on a charge of attempted murder. He is held at the Harrison County jail on a $1 million bond set by Justice Court Judge Diane Ladner.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959.
