A 40-year-old Hancock County man shot in the face Sunday in Bayside Park is expected to survive, said Don Bass, chief deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

Bass said the shooting was called in by someone at the scene around 12:30 p.m. The victim, who has not been identified, was walking along Sunflower Street when he was shot, Bass said.

The victim was able to tell deputies that the man who shot him was driving a late-model, silver vehicle. Bass said the victim was taken to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

He said investigators will be interviewing the victim once he is able to talk.

“He was very fortunate,” Bass said, “to say the least.”

He said deputies recovered a projectile at the scene, which was on Sunflower between West Greene and George streets.
