A Gulfport teen is accused of fleeing the scene of a 2016 accident in Bay St. Louis, evading capture for six months, and avoiding prosecution when he missed a court hearing.
Alloyshious Dajuan Bennett, who was 18 at the time of the crash but is now 19, of Gulfport is finally back in jail, officials said Thursday.
Bay St. Louis Police Chief Daren Freeman said Thursday that Bennett’s troubles began on October 2, 2016, when he was driving a vehicle that struck a bicyclist on Old Spanish Trail.
The victim suffered “major injuries” as a result of the crash, Freeman said.

A few weeks later, security officers at the Island View Casino became suspicious of a vehicle that had been abandoned in the garage, officials said.
Gulfport police contacted Bay St. Louis investigators, who determined it was the same vehicle involved in the crash, Freeman said.
Bennett was identified as a suspect; however, he wasn’t arrested until February on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing injury.
On Feb. 22, Bennett posted bond and promptly disappeared again, missing a court date in April.
According to Freeman, Bennett was arrested earlier this week at a Gulfport restaurant.
He is being held at the Harrison County jail under no bond pending a hearing in Bay St. Louis Municipal Court.
