A George County resident found a dead body. Officials want to know how he died.

George County investigators are treating the death of a man found outside a home Thursday as a possible homicide, Sheriff Keith Havard said.

A motorist driving along Dickerson Sawmill Road saw the body, stopped and reported it to authorities.

There were no obvious signs of injury, Havard said, but the death is being treated as a homicide pending autopsy results.

Havard identified the deceased as Brandon Cooper, 32. His body was found outside the home of a friend. The friend, Havard said, was at work at the time.

“We are not sure if it was something natural, like a heat stroke, or what,” Havard said. “It’s unusual, but we have no reason to believe any foul play is involved whatsoever.”

Sheriff’s deputies searched the surrounding area out of an abundance of caution.
