A woman believed to be assaulted by a man she was dating left his home and sought help, police said.

Daniel Matthew Lyrock, 30, of Waveland, is accused of trying to strangle the woman during an assault at his home on Favre Street, Waveland Police Investigator Chris Ory said.

“She was able to get away from him and went to a business down the street,” Ory said. “She had a friend pick her up and take her to the police department.”

Police arrested Lyrock at his home at 3:24 a.m. Saturday.

Attempted strangulation elevated his charge to aggravated domestic assault, a felony, Ory said.

Strangulation or attempted strangulation have been grounds for an aggravated domestic assault charge in Mississippi since 2010.

Lyrock was being held with no bond at the Hancock County jail pending an initial court appearance.
