Man shot in Gulfport after striking his girlfriend, witnesses say

A grand jury will decide whether or not to indict a man on an aggravated assault charge after police said he shot another man at a residence early Monday morning.

Sgt. Joshua Bromen said Gulfport police responded to a call of a shooting about 1:45 a.m. Monday at the 4700 block of Cardinal Drive.

When officers arrived, they found Steven Vincent Thomas suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Witnesses told police Thomas had become violent at the residence and struck his girlfriend before trying to fight with everyone else at the residence. That’s when Marcellus Holmes shot Thomas in the stomach, Bromen said.

Daniels suffered bruising and swelling on her head, and Thomas was taken by American Medical Response to an area hospital for treatment.

Bromen said the findings of the aggravated assault will be presented to a grand jury for review, and the investigation is ongoing.
