An Ocean Springs High School teacher received the John K. Bettersworth Award from the Mississippi Historical Society.

Lamenda Hase, who teaches U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History, received the annual award on Saturday.

It is presented annually to an outstanding middle or high school history teacher.

The award memorializes Bettersworth, a distinguished historian and author who served as a professor and administrator at Mississippi State University for almost 40 years and as president of the Mississippi Historical Society.

"I am incredibly honored to receive the John K. Bettersworth Award for 2016," said Hase. "It is an amazing feeling to be recognized for my hard work and continued dedication to the teaching profession and the students of Ocean Springs High School. I am flattered that the Mississippi Historical Society chose me as an outstanding teacher for continuing to share my love and passion for history with the community."
