Woman in overnight fire died from smoke inhalation

A woman killed in an overnight fire in Pascagoula died from smoke inhalation Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said.

The woman, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was found by firefighters after they had extinguished the fire in the downstairs apartment at The Palms on Catalpa Street, said Capt. Donnie Carlson of the Pascagoula Fire Department.

The fire destroyed the woman's apartment, but because of the cinder block construction, spared the three surrounding apartments in the two story building he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
