City police have confirmed that Tanner Charles Fountain, 18, of Ocean Springs died late last night in a one-car accident on Government Street.
Fountain was headed east on Government driving a green 1997 Pontiac Grand Am and hit a power pole and then an oak tree in the 2200 block of Government, near Bills Avenue, police said.
Police received several 911 calls reporting a serious accident around midnight and said the official time of the accident was 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
Upon officers' arrival, they saw the vehicle heavily damaged and on fire. The driver was unconscious.

The city Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance responded and the fire was extinguished quickly, but Fountain died at the scene, police said.
Fountain, a 2010 graduate of Ocean Springs High School, was alone in the car.
Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said Fountain died of massive blunt force trauma.
Is is the first traffic fatality of the year in Jackson County and the third of the year in South Mississippi.
