A fire at the Howard Johnson on South Tucker Road caused firefighters to evacuate guests and close the hotel.
The hotel is located just off Interstate-10 at Exit 50.
Most of the damage was to the third-floor room. The sprinkler system in the hotel put out most of the fire, according to fire officials on scene.
Chief Lyle Crandall of Fort Bayou Fire Deparment said his firefighters helped evacuate the 78 guests inside. He said he is having the hotel close because of the water damage from the sprinkler system activating.
There was minor damage to the room. Crandall said he believes the cause was from a guest smoking in the room.
