Board votes to terminate officer accused in sex crimes

The Board of Aldermen on Thursday voted to terminate Ocean Springs police Lt. Steven Futral, who was arrested this week on four counts of possession of child pornography.

City officials announced their decision after meeting in executive session.

Jackson County deputies first arrested Futral, 44, Monday night after searching his home and seizing his personal computer. He got out of jail Tuesday on a $50,000 bond but was arrested again Wednesday on three additional counts of possession of child pornography. That arrest followed a forensic examination of files on his police computer.

Futral is accused of downloading sexually explicit images of children from at least four Web sites. He was being held in the George County jail, with a total bond of $150,000 on the last three charges. If convicted on all counts, he could go to prison for up to 160 years.

The investigating was continuing.

The board made its decision after hearing the results of an internal police investigation. Police Chief Lionel Cothern made the recommendation to terminate Futral based on the findings.
