Jackson County welcome center to be demolished ahead of $35 million rebuild

The welcome center in Jackson County is set to be demolished this summer as the Mississippi Department of Transportation embarks on a $35 million rebuilding project.

Officials say the current welcome center on I-10 will close July 1, with the new center expected to reopen in summer 2028.

“The new welcome center will feature a modernized facility that will better meet the needs of today’s travelers. In addition to the new building, drainage and water system upgrades are included,” MDOT public information officer Anna Ehrgott said.

Eley Guild Hardy architect Tommy Allen said the center will feature a covered porch, vending area, information center, indoor seating and restrooms, a small gallery and five picnic pavilions.

“I think that everybody, at least on the Coast and throughout a lot of Mississippi, knows that we needed this building really, really badly,” Allen said.

Allen said EGH prioritized sourcing local materials for the build, and that every component of the rest stop is “American-made.”

“You don’t get new welcome centers, but once every maybe 50 years, so you got to make sure that you do it right,” Allen said.

Southern Transportation District commissioner Charles Busby said the new center will provide 62 truck and five bus parking stations.

“The construction of this new welcome center on I-10 marks a major step forward for Mississippi’s transportation infrastructure and our commitment to serving the traveling public,” Busby said. “Additionally, it will enhance safety and security, provide accessible facilities and highlight Mississippi’s natural beauty, hospitality and culture.”

With construction soon underway, motorists looking for a break can stop at the I-10 Westbound Rest Area in Gautier. The rest stop features pavilions, picnic tables, vending machines and restrooms.
