Water-contact advisory in South MS after half-million gallons of wastewater released
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has issued a water-contact advisory after the release of more than a half-million gallons of wastewater into South Mississippi waterways.
Contact with water should be avoided in all of Comynie Bayou and a section of the Pascagoula River from the west end of Delmas Avenue south to the mouth of the river.
The advisory is being issued due to a wastewater collection system bypass near John Avenue in Pascagoula that resulted in the release of about 550,000 gallons of wastewater. The bypass has since been repaired, according to MDEQ.
All water-contact recreational activities such as swimming, wading, and fishing in these waters should be avoided. MDEQ will continue to monitor conditions and revise the advisory as needed.
