A reality television show is filming next month in Ocean Springs.
The show, called “Relative Race,” sends teams on a quest to find long-lost family members and win a $50,000 prize. Its previous seasons are packed with hugs and tears.
Show organizers are planning to film in Inner Harbor Park or Fort Maurepas. A permit application approved by the city’s Board of Aldermen this week says cameras will roll from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13.
The show follows a classic reality television format: Four teams compete in a cross-country road trip over 10 days to find relatives they’ve never met or reunite with biological parents, using paper maps and no technology.
The host, Dan Debenham, says in a promotional video that the show was inspired by long drives he took as a child from Alaska to the lower 48 states to visit loved ones.
“It was all about family,” he said.
“Relative Race” has gained nearly 2 million followers on social media since it started airing in 2016. Its 16th season premiers Sept. 21. Crews are filming part of Season 17 in Ocean Springs.
The show airs on BYUtv, a service of Brigham Young University in Utah. Seasons stream on the BYUtv app and website.
Laurri Garcia, a public affairs officer for the city of Ocean Springs, said Thursday that producers were still determining which park to film in.
