Postponed: Traffic and parking project rescheduled for a busy street in South MS

Shops and restaurants won’t be affected today, as plans to pave Government Street in Ocean Springs have been postponed.

A new date will be announced.

Crews will begin work Monday along Government Street to open water valves, sewer manholes and storm drains. Drivers are asked to be cautions.

Paving work was expected to begin Monday, with bans on parking on Government Street and traffic down to one lane in each direction while the work was underway.

Suggested detours would have moved traffic to US 90 or Porter Avenue.

Visitors walk among the restaurants and shops along Government Street in Ocean Springs. While the street is paved, customers will have to find somewhere else to park to get to restaurants and shops.

Businesses will remain open and customers will have to walk from one of the parking lots off Government Street or along Washington Avenue.

This is the latest of downtown projects in the city. This spring, traffic was restricted on some streets while John Travolta filmed scenes for his latest “Cash Out” movie. Government Street will be closed again for Cruisin’ The Coast in October and the Peter Anderson Festival in November.
