Ocean Springs Middle School entered lockdown after bullets found on campus, officials say
Bullets found at Ocean Springs Middle School sent students into a brief lockdown Thursday morning until an investigation by campus officials found no credible threat, the school district said.
School officials found no weapon and do not believe students and staff were ever in danger, the Ocean Springs School District said in a letter to families Thursday morning.
Classes returned to normal schedules after 10 a.m.
The school entered lockdown at 9:23 a.m. after a student reported there were bullets on campus, said Trey Brennan, the communications director for the Ocean Springs School District.
The lockdown ended about 9:45 a.m. but the school asked students to shelter in place to keep hallways clear while campus police and school officials investigated.
It is unclear how bullets ended up on the middle school’s campus. Brennan said campus officials found the bullets on school property but did not say where they were discovered.
The report came from a student in one classroom, Brennan said. The teacher then shared the report with school administration, which triggered the lockdown. Brennan said campus police isolated the investigation to that classroom and searched those students quickly.
Brennan said school officials were questioning several students Thursday morning. He declined to share more information about the investigation because he said the school is now handling it as a student discipline matter.
The Ocean Springs School District enters lockdown or shelter in place immediately if school officials receive a report of suspicious activity. Campus police then work to verify whether the report is accurate and communicate with parents and guardians.
