Jackson County woods fire nearly contained as video shows blaze consume trees
At least 300 to 400 acres of woods in the Gulf Park Estates area stretching to the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge have burned in a fire, but the blaze is mostly contained, Jackson County Emergency Manager Earl Etheridge said at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The fire began about 2:15 p.m., Etheridge said, and multiple fire crews from various departments in the area have responded to contain the blaze and keep homes safe.
No homes are expected to be affected by the fire, Etheridge said.
“We’ve spent most of our time protecting homes on Fountainbleu Road and 19th Avenue and the streets around that area,” Etheridge told the Sun Herald.
The U.S. Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Park also used equipment from the Sandhill Crane Refuge to help contain the blaze.
Etheridge said at 9 p.m. that fire crews had contained the fire, but “hundreds” of acres had been burned.
The Ocean Springs Fire Department has issued a burn ban in the city.
