Gautier gets Futnet courts and more in revamped soccer complex
The Jackson County Recreation Department cut the ribbon Tuesday on the newly renovated Jackson County Soccer Complex in Gautier.
“I am very excited about projects like this that allow us to provide residents better facilities for their enjoyment,” said Director of Recreation Darcie Crew in a press release. “The qualities of this upgraded complex will provide for more hours of play and improved safer playing conditions.”
The $3.2 million renovation started last year and included an assortment of upgrades and additions, including ADA accessible sidewalks, a new parking lot, a walking track and Futnet courts.
“The added amenities to the Jackson County Soccer Complex fit hand-in-hand with Gautier’s mission of bringing new and innovative ways to play on the Gulf Coast,” said Mayor Casey Vaughan in a Facebook post celebrating the opening of the facility.
Although not well known in the U.S, futnet is a unique sport played worldwide.
Originally from the former Czechoslovakia, futnet, also known as football tennis, combines tennis, soccer and volleyball into one.
Played on a court similar to a traditional tennis court, players attempt to hit the ball over a low hanging net onto their opponent’s side in a way that cannot be returned. Players are permitted to hit the ball with any part of their body besides their hands.
These are the first dedicated Futnet courts in the country, according to the press release.
