Coroner hopes to identify ‘John Doe,’ man killed by train in Ocean Springs

The second fatal train-pedestrian crash this month occurred Monday in Ocean Springs.

A man was hit around noon at the tracks near Hickory Drive.

“At this time we do not have his identify,” Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. said at 3 p.m. “At this time he is a John Doe.”

Anyone with information about who the man killed might be is asked to call Ocean Springs Police at 228-875-2211 or the coroner’s office at 228-769-3197.

Ocean Springs Police said to witnesses saw the man walking westbound on the railroad tracks and he did not respond to the westbound train’s warning of its approach. The train entered emergency mode and came to an emergency stop after fatality striking him, police said.

Roads in the area were blocked while emergency crews, CSX personnel and the coroner performed their duties, police said.

On Dec. 15, another man was struck and killed by a train while walking on the tracks in Ocean Springs.

Witnesses say the man was walking east on the railroad tracks near Cherokee Glenn and did not respond the the warning whistle from the westbound train. The area is off U.S. 90, just east of the Biloxi Bay train bridge.
