Man hit, killed by car in dark area of U.S. 90 in Gautier, police say
A 61-year-old Louisiana man was killed Monday night when he was hit by a car traveling westbound on U.S. 90, Gautier police said.
He is the third pedestrian hit and killed on U.S. 90 in Gautier this year.
Capt. David Bever did not release the name of the man pending notification of his family. He also did not name the driver of the car that hit him.
Bever said the man was not from the Coast and the driver of the Nissan Altima that hit him lives in Gautier.
The collision occurred at about 8 p.m. near Beasley Road and U.S. 90, west of Mallette Brothers Construction on the north side of the highway.
Capt. Bever said the preliminary investigative report shows the driver was not at fault.
It is a dark section of U.S. 90 where it happened. The city streetlights end at City Hall, he said, and the accident occurred west of that.
“It was an unfortunate situation, especially at night,” Capt. Bever said. “Cars are traveling faster than people think. It’s hard to judge distances.”
The two previous pedestrians were hit and killed on an area of U.S. 90 that does have streetlights. They were in the vicinity of The Shoe Dept. store, which used to be a Jerry Lee’s grocery.
According to Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr., Charles George was hit and killed by a vehicle on July 9 and on Oct. 14, Wilfredo Elgin lost his life when he was hit and killed on that same stretch of road.
