Coroner names man shot and killed by Pascagoula officer responding to suicide threat

A man threatening suicide and armed with a knife when a Pascagoula police officer shot and killed him Wednesday night has been identified as Adam Carroll, 37.

Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. identified Carroll as the shooting victim Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened after Pascagoula police responded to a report of man threatening suicide in the 4200 block of Newman Street, a Pascagoula police press release said.

Once officers arrived, Carroll armed himself with a knife, refused repeated requests for him to drop the weapon and started approaching the officers, resulting in the fatal shooting.

Acadian Ambulance responded, but Carroll was already dead.

Police Chief Matt Chapman said the shooting was captured in audio and video footage.

“This morning, we are reviewing everything and passing it along to MBI,” Chapman said Thursday. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to do an independent investigation.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

An autopsy is pending.
