A group of die-hard paddlers will take their kayaks out Saturday and head up Bayou Castelle, off the Pascagoula River, to Bluff Creek.
It was too cold to drive some days this past week, but warm enough to paddle?
Darcie Crew, Eric Richards and Charlie McVea — members of Paradise Paddlers out of Pascagoula — say the weather will be great Saturday, but dress warmly.
Even though Richards, who used his (stand up) paddle board Friday morning for fishing and couldn’t wash it off because his garden hose was frozen, said “Saturday will be beautiful.”
It’s an easy paddle for newcomers.
The email that went out to paddlers last week said, “I know that it’s January and it’s as cold as heck outside, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t plan for the warmer days to come.
“The forecast for Saturday looks pretty good, so let’s get on the water.
“Anyone interested, meet at 10 a.m. at 2339 Bayou View Drive, Gautier, to launch. Our hosts have a nice sand beach and plenty of parking space. We’ll paddle up Bayou Castelle and in to Bluff Creek. The plan is to stop at Pine Island around noon to take a break and eat lunch. The round trip is a little over 6 miles. We should be back around 2 p.m.”
The email said to bring a sack lunch and get ready to enjoy unique scenery of cypress swamps and a salt marsh.
“This will be a leisurely cruise in protected waters, so it’s ideal for newcomers to the sport.”
