Weaving Christmas hearts is how this Danish woman shares her heritage

Making and teaching traditional Danish Christmas cutouts is what Else Martin does with her heritage.

All four of her grandparents were from Denmark, and growing up she remembers her mother saving colorful paper all year so they would have something with which to make woven heart baskets or cut-work snowflakes.

Martin, of Hurley, even visited Denmark in the 1990s to find her ancestry, and she was successful.

What she learned was that there were teachers in her bloodline, and it helped her understand more about herself.

Martin will teach Danish cut-out ornaments at the Pascagoula Public Library, 3214 Pascagoula St., on Tuesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Call 769-3078 for reservations.

Her workshop is being sponsored by the Singing River Genealogy-Local History Library. It’s called Cultural Paper Holiday Ornaments Make n’ Take.

The History Library will supply the paper and materials.
