Gulfport men charged in kidnapping, burglary (updated 5 p.m.)

One of two Gulfport men arrested this morning after a burglary and kidnapping has been charged with an additional burglary, Police Chief Alan Weatherford said.

Police believe one of the men, Damon Jermain Miskell, 24, stole a gun found a home on Forest Drive during a burglary on Feb. 23.

Police arrested Miskell and Derrick Leon Lawrence, 27, earlier today on two counts of kidnapping and one count each of burglary of an occupied dwelling, auto theft and possession of a stolen firearm.

Weatherford said officers responded shortly before midnight Tuesday to the 2800 block of 58th Avenue for a report of a burglary in process. Officers spotted the suspects leaving in the victim’s car and tried to stop them, he said.

After a short distance, Lawrence and Miskell exited the car and fled. Lawrence was captured immediately and Miskell was located by a K-9 team and taken into custody, Weatherford said.

The two victims, a woman and her child, were found in the home. They had been bound with duct tape.

Items from the residence were found in the victim’s car that had been used by the suspects to flee the scene, Weatherford said.

Larence and Miskell were taken to the Harrison County jail. Bond was set at $700,000 each by Justice Court Judge Bruce Ladner.

Justice Court Judge Melvin Ray has set an additional bond of $100,000 for Miskell in connection with the burglary on Forest Drive.

Both are also in violation of their release from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Weatherford said.
