Four people woke up this morning to the sound of their home burning.

“The fire woke them up,” said Gulfport Fire Chief Michael Beyerstedt. “They heard the sound of the fire popping and cracking. They were able to get outside.”

The fire, which started shortly before 5 a.m. at the Texas Avenue single-story home, was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Crews battled the blaze inside the home until several explosions from what Beyerstedt believes to be propane tanks forced them outside to continue their efforts.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest it was an electrical fire, he said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which destroyed the home.

Red Cross personnel are meeting with the residents this morning, he said.

Sun Herald updates the story in Wednesday’s edition.
