GULFPORT — A man who appeared to be speeding and under the influence of alcohol was taken into custody Tuesday night after the 2004 Mustang he was driving hit a 2010 Honda Accord, pinning a woman between the cars, police said.
The woman was putting her baby in a car seat in a business parking lot at 1594 Pass Rd. when her car was hit at 5:15 p.m., Deputy Police Chief Leonard Papania said.
The child was not injured.
Witnesses reported the Mustang, driven by Darryl Edward Blappert, 26, of Gulfport, was westbound on Pass Road and left the road near 15th Avenue, Papania said. The woman’s injuries appeared to be serious. She was taken to a hospital. Her name was not available.

Police arrested Blappert on a charge of DUI causing serious injury.
