Gulfport firefighters are battling a house fire 1t 1417 E. Pass Road just east of Cowan-Lorraine Road this afternoon.
Firefighters were dispatched at 12:54 p.m. to the unoccupied wooden structure adjacent to Handsboro Baptist Church.
The house is fully involved. There are four pumpers, two command and one rescue units on scene, said Battalion Chief Dean Morrow. Heavy smoke can be seen from blocks away.
The house is owned by the estate of family that lives out of state and recently was boarded up at the city's request.

"I feel so bad for them. They've been to sell it," said Amanda Broome, the office manager for Century 21, which is handling the listing. "It's a very attractive piece of commercial property."
Traffic is moving slowly because of the firefighting efforts. One eastbound lane of traffic is closed in that area and motorists should avoid it if possible.
