I-10 will close twice overnight for demolition of bridge at Buc-ee’s site. Here are the dates

It will take two nights to demolish the bridge over Interstate 10 at Menge Avenue to make way for a new interchange at the Buc-ee’s travel center.

On Monday, Mississippi Department of Transportation released the dates.

All lanes of I-10 westbound at Menge Avenue will close overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 7.

The eastbound lanes of I-10 will close on another night. MDOT will notify the public when the I-10 eastbound closure is imminent.

“The timing of both closures is subject to change and dependent upon construction progress, availability of materials and weather conditions,” MDOT said in a press release.

Instead of a detour miles out of the way during the closures, all traffic will be directed onto the exit ramp at the exit and immediately back onto the interstate at the entrance ramp, said Kelly Castleberry, Mississippi Department of Transportation district engineer for the Sixth District.

The work must be completed in just one night and traffic will be down to a single lane as it detours.

Once the bridge is demolished, a new, wider bridge will rebuilt as part of the $15 million, 13-month project. Two lanes of traffic will be open in each direction during the rebuild, with barriers in place to protect workers as traffic speeds by.

MDOT recently released a status report on other road projects in South Mississippi:

I-10 widening project from just west of Diamondhead to just east of County Farm Road, should begin late in 2023. This is in the same area as the current interchange project.

MS 57 in Jackson County: Clearing should be completed in the fall and crews will work on drainage structures and bridge construction through the end of the year. Current bridge work includes driving piling at three bridge sites. The $212.6 million project is expected to wrap up in 2027.

Signal improvements in Harrison and Hancock counties: Traffic signals and technology equipment damaged during Hurricane Zeta is being replaced at 42 intersections U.S. on 90 from Bay St. Louis to Biloxi. The work on high priority signals in Gulfport and Biloxi is complete, and the contractor is working from east to west to complete groups of intersections. A similar project is under way in Harrison County at 51 intersections along U.S. 49, I-10, I-110, MS 605 and MS 67.
