Police investigate teen’s shooting in Gulfport

A 16-year-old accidentally shot himself Monday in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter, Gulfport police say.

Gulfport Police Sgt. Joshua Bromen said the teen was in a vehicle when the firearm went off, striking him in the leg. The teen walked to the Walmart to get help.

The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m.

A police officer who is a former paramedic reported that the teen said it was an accident, and his leg wound was not a major injury, Bromen said.

Police were already in the area for a shoplifting complaint, Bromen said.

The investigation is ongoing.
