Emergency personnel find body of person in distress
After a search that lasted more than two hours, a body was recovered Thursday morning near the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor.
Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Public Information Director Melissa Scallan said the agency recovered the body of a man about 7:30 a.m.
A backpack was found on the beach that is believed to belong to the man, Scallan said.
The body has not been identified by Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove. Although the death looks to be a drowning, Hargrove has not released the cause of death.
Biloxi police Sgt. Jackie Rhodes said a call came in from a shrimp boat at 5 a.m. The caller reported seeing a person splashing in the water and then the person disappeared
Biloxi police and fire units responded along with the DMR, which led the search.
The body was found in about 6 feet of water a few yards off the beach in the channel north of Deer Island.
